Take a closer look at a nematode. You will observe that the body of a nematode can hardly be segmented (into body regions). Mostly, it is tapered towards both ends. The body is covered with a cuticle, finely to strongly annulated. The cuticle consists of the outermost layer or epidermis and groups of muscles that powers the undulating movement of the nematode.
Below the cuticle, there is the body cavity of the nematode. The cavity contains fluid in which the internal organs are immersed. The digestive system is a canal that comprises the mouth opening, buccal cavity, pharynx, intestine, rectum, and anal aperture. The shape of some parts of the digestive system may vary for a particular feeding habit. The pharynx comprises a bulb (acting as a pump) that pushes the food down into the intestine.
